THE
FOUNTAIN
With
Hugh
Jackman,
Rachel
Weisz,
Ellen
Burstyn
Directed
by Darren
Aronofsky
Aronofsky
is not
your
everyday
director
but
a special
kind
of genius.
That
is easy
to see
from
his
first
two
features,
Pi
and
Requiem
For
A Dream.
Here
he takes
us on
a whole
different
trip
of three
parallel
existences,
one
set
in modern
time,
another
in the
past
and
one
more
in a
futuristic
sphere
space
ship.
Hugh
Jackman
portrays
all
three
of these
interlinked
characters:
a research
doctor
trying
to find
a cure
for
his
wife’s
terminal
illness,
a conquistador
searching
for
the
tree
of life
in the
Mayan
jungle,
and
a man
traveling
to a
destination
of renewal.
X-Men
fans
will
not
be impressed
if they’re
expecting
a full-on
action
adventure,
and
as is
so often
the
case,
I’m
afraid
this
will
not
find
a mainstream
audience,
as this
will
demand
too
much
thinking
for
someone
who
just
wants
cheap,
brainless
entertainment
- but
perhaps
I can
encourage
them
to check
this
out
to get
blown
away
on a
different
level
to the
Die
Hard
one
they’d
prefer.
This
is also
not
the
kind
of movie
you’ll
grasp
100%
without
prior
knowledge
of its
various
levels
(or
without
any
info
on it
whatsoever),
as I
opted
to do.
It’s
a trip
to say
the
least.
Extra
features
include
an extended
piece
depicting
life
in the
spaceship
and
an enthralling
documentary
on the
making
of the
film,
from
its
initial
production
kick-start
in Australia
and
the
studio
pulling
the
plug,
to its
re-approach,
shooting
and
completion
in Canada
with
a substantially
diminished
budget.
Interviews
and
behind
the
scenes
footage
gives
one
a better
insight
into
what
exactly
The
Fountain
encapsulates
(and
emanates).
